The following products are targeted mainly at large Windows 95
installations using Novell 4.x NetWare servers, but can be used
in other contexts as well.
The tools originate from an installation where Windows 95
operating system software is installed at the client side by
downloading a complete image from a Novell server, and where
distribution of applications is done with the Novell NetWare
Application Launcher (NAL)
This program is intended to be executed once by NAL when an
operation system image download has been completed .
The NDSPRINT program reads the Novell NDS and decides which
printers and drivers the client needs, and then installs them
without operator intervention.
This allows the same Windows 95 image to be used for different
users, and allows the system administrator to control which
printers the client should have access to, by controlling which
printer groups the user is a member of.
This program is capable of identifying a specific computer
type (manufacturer and model number) using the system management
features of the BIOS.
It runs under DOS, and is used during a network boot to determine
which complete Windows 95 image to download from the server.
A standard .INI file maps manufacturer and model number to an
image file number. Using the .INI file it is possible to use the
same image on computers with only minor differences.
Besides working with SMBIOS version 2 compatible computers, it
also works with most Compaq computers using Compaq BIOS
extensions..
With limitations, the program can be made to work with non-SMBIOS
compliant computers, and the program can be extended to return
asset tag, serial number and other similar information.
This program returns information about the layout of
partitions on the primary hard disk.
It runs under DOS and is mainly used in installations where
Compaq computers receive operating system images using the Ghost
program product.
Because it is unknown at re-installation time of a Windows 95
image, whether a Compaq system partition is installed, and
because Ghost operates on partition numbers, this program can be
used to ensure that a partition with user data (normally D:) is
not overwritten during a image download.
This program solves a specific problem, where a portable
computer used in a docking station with a 3COM network card
installed, receives a Windows 95 image from the server.
During a normal installation certain parts of the MAC address for
3COM network cards are stored in the registry. Because this
information is not available in an image, this program makes the
necessary changes to the registry before Windows completes the
installation.
